Advent Calendar Door #8 – Jesus is…promised

Last advent I was pregnant and I thought a lot about the anticipation Mary must have felt in the last days before her baby was born.

Unlike her, I didn’t know mine would be born a boy.

I’d also had no promises that he’d make it to full-term, or make it at all (which in the end came closer to the truth than any of us wanted).

In first century Palestine, I wonder how women truly felt when they realised they were expecting. Probably a mix of excitement and trepidation.

I know enough to know that pregnancy is still tragically often a death sentence for women.

But in Mary’s case there were great differences. Mainly in the form of an appearance of an angel and a promise from God.

Of course the very fact she was pregnant would have been a source of stress but it was delivered with assurance – of God’s favour and his greater plan for good.

From Mary’s perspective all she was being asked to do was ‘trust’ (along with grow and deliver and nurture the Son of God!). But the ‘trust’ part is the bit in all of this I personally find hardest to grasp.

I guess that’s where I need to return to God’s promises and that the fulfillment of God’s unfailing love is in Jesus: the One whom was promised.

Today’s reflection was written by Joelle.
