Advent Calendar Door #18 – Jesus is…passionate

Today’s reflection is on an idea that has been very significant for me. You may spot a slight theme creeping in to some of the reflections I have written and chosen, but I think we really need to hear that Jesus is for us and with us, because that is the message at the heart of Christmas, and it is the message that brings hope and life.

Jesus was a passionate man. He felt anger burn so hot that he made a whip and flipped over tables as he drove the moneylenders from the temple. He felt compassion so great that he used the power that created the universe to feed a hungry crowd. And he felt despair grip him so tightly that he sweated drops of blood.

I have a history of depression, and so that scene in Gethsemane has special resonance for me. It tells me that fear and anguish and sadness are valid parts of the human experience. That doesn’t change the fact that they are rubbish parts of the human experience, but it does mean that we are not failures as humans or as Christians for going through them.

After all, if the most perfect human of all lived with and through them, and if he could still hold enough faith to pray ‘your will be done’, then there is hope for all of us.

And because the light of the world has experienced our darkness, there is no place that does not have light within it, and there is no situation that cannot be wrapped in and suffused by that light.

In more ways than one, the passion of he Christ is our redemption.
